Improving your home office with scents

As humans have 450 different types of olfactory receptors, natural candles can be a great way to change an environment that is fast becoming charged with unpleasant energy, and to shift your perspective to one that encompasses a calmer and more centred approach, all through the simplicity of home fragrance.

As humans have 450 different types of olfactory receptors, natural candles can be a great way to change an environment that is fast becoming charged with unpleasant energy. They can also shift your perspective to one that encompasses a calmer and more centred approach. All through the simplicity of home fragrance.

Have you ever smelt something that’s stirred up some long-forgotten memories, brought forward by the nostalgia triggered by that scent?

It’s quite certain that your answer is yes. It’s always an interesting sensation to experience, especially when you just can’t quite place what the scent is.

With humans having 450 different types of olfactory receptors, it’s unsurprising that certain aromas can trigger such memories. And our sense of smell goes even further than that. Certain fragrances, particularly when paired with sounds or location, can do a great deal to change our mood too. It’s no wonder then that so many light candles for special occasions, to set a romantic mood or to create a relaxing space. At Lubien we believe that there’s yet another setting where candles should be used, one where there’s a lack of use so far – home offices.

For some of us, working from home has been a real blessing in disguise. For others, it’s been precisely the other way round. Perhaps you’ve experienced screeching kids in the back of your Zoom call or not had access to the facilities you would usually take for granted. Maybe everything is running smoothly and yet the absence of a separate workspace is starting to take its toll. Natural candles can be a great way to change an environment that is fast becoming charged with unpleasant energy. They can shift your perspective to one that encompasses a calmer and more centred approach, all through the simplicity of home fragrance.

How can scented candles improve your home office?

Relieve stress and anxiety

For centuries, certain plants, such as lavender and chamomile, have been used to soothe nerves, induce sleep, and relieve the effects of metal suffering. Lubien Candles’ Shere Candle does just that. With top notes of lavender and basil, and heart notes of chamomile and petitgrain, this natural candle can be used to ease you into serene state in which your mental clarity will be greatly improved.

Stress is antithetical to good work, and more importantly, to good health. Too often we work so hard that we neglect our mental wellbeing and forget to declutter our minds, to breathe deeply and just be present. Home fragrance is particularly good at inspiring such a mindset – why would you not breathe deeply when your office is filled with the delightful scent of lavender, chamomile, and orange blossom?

Remind us of nature

Working from home has been hard on us in many ways. Not least to say the separation from any scenes of nature we may have usually appreciated on our commute to work. All our hand-poured candles are made using natural products and are crafted from eco-friendly rapeseed wax.

The scents that fill the room when our natural candles are burning can transport you to an entirely different place. Your feet might be firmly on floor of your office, but you may feel that you are sat doing your work surrounded by a field of summer fruits or deep in the woods by the cypress trees and a running stream. Visualisation is a powerful mindfulness tool and can set the scene for a workspace humming with tranquillity and joy.

Smell inducing associations

Association is another powerful tool that can be enhanced through home fragrance and the use of our premium candles. Perhaps you already have certain smells associated with certain feelings or events. The tang of sea salt reminds you of holidays by cold British seas and times of laughter and happiness. The rich aroma of cumin brings back your favourite dish and a warm, full belly. Well, you can actively craft positive associations too.

If you begin to light a certain candle every time you enter your home office, you will begin to associate that smell with hard work, focus, and motivation. Similar to the use of lavender scents as a reminder to take a deep breath and centre yourself, you can routinely light one of our candles to form an association with, and a subconscious reminder of, hard work.

Tips for creating a calm, focussed home working environment

Our premium, natural candles are a great starting point for establishing a mindful study space. There is however more that can be done to optimise the space you occupy.

1. Fill it with pictures of people who make you happy

2. Allow in as much natural light as possible

3. Declutter your space and keep in there only the things that are necessary or that make you smile

4. Test out your green fingers and buy a plant or two. These really help with air quality

5. Speaking of air quality, crack open a window and let some fresh air into your lungs!
